Decision making is a crucial step taken by the nurses in the favour of the patient’s safety and to enhance the quality of nursing care. To provide the quality of care nurses should acquire knowledge, skills and adequate information in order to obtain the optimum outcome. O’Neill (2005) decision making is a complex process which requires a comprehensive knowledge and information as well as experiences and skills to deal with the situations. Banning (2008) in this process, the nurses make judgements between different alternatives in order to provide the care to the patient.
As mention in literature, nurses make decisions in clinical setting by two approaches. Hammond (1996) in the one hand, hypothetico-deductive approach used commonly in research decision making and it is the systematic and scientific method where logical rules is analysed until decision is made in. In the other hand, intuitive-humanist model is the ability of nurses developed along with the experiences while managing the clinical situations. Thompson (1999) it distinguishes the judgement of expert nurses with incompetent where experts don’t depend and follow the step-by-step analytical principles while making decision in clinical context. Bjork & Hamilton (2011) according to Lauri and Salantera clinical decision making include four stages they are data collection, data processing and identification of problems, plans of action, and implementation of plan, monitoring, and evaluation (p. 1224). Whereas, none of these steps are applied in intuitive-humanist model and in hypothetico-deductive method only two steps are followed that is data processing and identification of problems. These steps facilitate the nurses in decision making by using both methods.
While talking about myself in decision making I used both methods according to the need of the situation. However, patient safety and quality of care is main concern in our profession.
